Water, Water everywhere.......

Water is something most of us take for granted.  Growing up in America we have never seen the severe clean water shortages of some other countries and the damage it does.  Our bodies are comprised of anywhere from 50-75% water.  So water is an essential life nutrient.  Growing up in WV before the advent of sports drinks, and too poor to buy soft drinks, water was our main drink other than milk.  Our water was from a very old method of distillation and filtration known widely as well water.  Nothing ever satisfied a thirst better than cold well water to me.

Today, we spend on average anywhere between 7 billion and 100 billion dollars on bottled water depending on who you ask.  The belief that bottled water is cleaner and better than regular tap water has made this a big industry.  But is this true?

There is an old Chinese proverb that goes like this:

When you drink the water, remember the spring.

So is that bottle of spring water better than what comes out of your faucet?  Actually, the EPA sets stricter standers for tap water than the FDA sets for bottled water.  Even further studies have found that 37% of bottled waters violate state or federal standards.  As a matter of fact, other studies have found that "an estimated 25 percent or more of bottled water is really just tap water in a bottle--sometimes further treated, sometimes not."

So unless your bottled water has been stored in an alaskan glacier for the last 23,000 years, there really is no difference between tap and bottled water.

I firmly believe in the 7th generation philosophy of how will our actions effect our children 7 generations from now.  In this case, approximately 1.5 billion barrels of oil are consumed to produce plastic for bottled water, enough to fuel 100,000 cars.  After the water has been consumed, the plastic bottle must be disposed of. According to the Container Recycling Institute, 86 percent of plastic water bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter. Incinerating used bottles produces toxic byproducts such as chlorine gas and ash containing heavy metals. Buried water bottles can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade.

Now, depending on where you live, the taste of your tap water can vary from very good to a little bit above motor oil.  A good and economical answer to this problem is home filtration systems.  For anywhere to the cost of a Brita filter that you attach to your faucet to a more complex system that is installed under your sink, you can have clean and good tasting water for a fraction of the cost of bottled water.

So think before you drink and the next time you`re thirsty, instead of reaching for the bottled water, take the tap instead.
